A green step towards a clean future: pollution-free gold mining

Scientists at Flinders University in Australia have developed a new and safe method for extracting gold from mineral resources and electronic waste, which works without using toxic substances such as mercury and cyanide. Relying on common water purification compounds, light, and a recyclable polymer, this method is an important step towards protecting the environment and improving the safety of extraction processes. In this technology, gold is first dissolved in a brine solution using a compound called trichloroisocyanuric acid. Next, the gold is absorbed and separated from the solution by a sulfur-based polymer. This polymer, after the gold is recovered, is reusable and can be used repeatedly in the extraction cycle.

This innovative method has been successfully tested on e-waste samples and has great potential for industrial scale implementation. According to the researchers’ findings, this technology has important advantages that distinguish it from conventional methods. Using this method completely eliminates the need for mercury and cyanide, thereby significantly reducing environmental risks and threats to human health. The use of safe ingredients such as light, salt, and non-toxic polymers makes it an environmentally friendly method. On the other hand, the simplicity of the process, low implementation cost, and high efficiency make this technology a very suitable option for small-scale mines and e-waste recycling. This scientific achievement is a successful example of the convergence of innovation, sustainability, and efficiency in the extraction industry, which can create a safer and cleaner future for mining and recycling activities.
