The scope of services provided in this project includes:

  • Conducting feasibility and preliminary studies
  • Preparation of architectural and engineering drawings (Phases 1 and 2)
  • Development of cost estimation documents and technical and execution specifications

Design Concept: The Airport as a Cultural Gateway and Symbol of Regional Dynamism

In today’s world, airports are no longer mere transportation hubs—they have evolved into dynamic, multifunctional spaces that reflect the cultural richness and social diversity of their surroundings.
Modern terminals are designed as active commercial centers, with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. The use of sustainable materials with minimal ecological impact, and the optimization of natural ventilation and lighting, are essential principles of contemporary airport design. Furthermore, architectural structure plays a critical role in establishing a sense of place, aiding passenger wayfinding, and defining spatial hierarchy through thoughtful use of columns, arches, and roof systems.

Inspired by this holistic approach, the design concept for Zahedan Airport’s new terminal draws upon the following themes:

  • A New Gateway to the City:

The terminal is envisioned as a modern symbol of welcome and connection. The large, sweeping roof arch forms a distinctive, inviting entrance, symbolically evoking Iran’s ancient city gates.

  • The Legend of Simorgh Brought to Life:

The terminal’s dynamic curved roof, inspired by the outstretched wings of Simorgh—a mythical Persian bird and symbol of flight—evokes a sense of soaring and liberation.

  • Entrance Portals Inspired by Local Architecture:

The arched entryways, derived from the traditional gateways of southeastern Iranian cities, create a visual connection to local architectural heritage and foster a sense of familiarity and belonging.

  • Cultural Narratives in Column Design:

The main columns subtly reference the vertical supports of nomadic black tents and the wooden looms used in carpet weaving—both iconic symbols of the rich tribal culture of Sistan and Baluchestan.

  • Colorful Louvers Reflecting Seasonal Winds:

The vertical colored louvers on the terminal façade are inspired by the 120-day seasonal winds of the Sistan region. These elements provide effective solar shading while symbolically representing a unique climatic feature.

Sustainability and Performance-Driven Architecture:

  • Maximized use of natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption
  • Clear spatial hierarchy to enhance user navigation and comfort
  • Environmentally responsible material selection adapted to the region’s climate

Conclusion:

Through a creative and culturally sensitive approach, ANIN Engineering Company aims to transform the new Zahedan Airport terminal into an architectural landmark—efficient, aesthetically refined, and deeply rooted in the identity of Sistan and Baluchestan.
This project represents a significant step toward enhancing air transport infrastructure and elevating airport service quality in the region.
