Design Concept: A Fusion of Urban Identity and Aviation Modernity

The design approach adopted by Anin blends two key themes: the airport as a symbol of modern progress and connectivity, and Kerman’s rich cultural and artistic heritage.

The terminal has been envisioned as a distinct and modern gateway to the city of Kerman. The large arch at the entrance is not only an eye-catching architectural element, but also a symbolic reference to the historic gates of ancient Iranian cities.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Kermani arts, the facade design incorporates almond and paisley motifs (commonly found in Kerman’s Pateh embroidery and carpet weaving). The terminal’s front facade is adorned with perforated copper panels featuring these patterns, establishing a visual identity deeply connected to the region’s culture and craftsmanship. The selected color palette—warm copper tones at lower levels transitioning to oxidized blue hues at higher levels—symbolizes the desert earth and Kerman’s blue skies.

On the airside facade, the design draws inspiration from a bird’s wings in flight, reflected in the roof form that rises at both ends to evoke a sense of lift and ascent. This elevation also gradually increases from the landside to the airside, subtly reinforcing the theme of takeoff and upward motion.

In line with the airport’s role as a technology-driven modern infrastructure, the design incorporates contemporary materials such as full-height curtain walls, allowing for maximum natural light and panoramic views for passengers. To reduce direct sunlight and enhance visual comfort, aluminum sunshades are integrated into the glass facade.

Cultural Integration:

At the terminal’s landside entrance, a ceramic-tiled mural features a verse by the mystical poet Shah Nematollah Vali, a prominent figure buried in nearby Mahan, Kerman. The mural, made of turquoise-glazed bricks and copper-colored calligraphy, offers a poetic and memorable farewell for departing passengers:

Though we are humbled before Kerman’s noble ones,No sorrow we feel, raised by this land’s stones and sun. Nowhere on earth is like Kerman to see, Kerman is the heart, and we are its heartbeat.

With its technical expertise, creative vision, and commitment to cultural relevance, ANIN Engineering Company strives to transform the new terminal at Kerman Airport into a landmark of modern yet authentic architecture—a true reflection of this historic desert city’s soul.
